Re-Configure Modem

Re-Configure Modem brings up the Re-Configure Modem dialog box, which shows which COM ports are:
a) available for use

c) connected to a functioning fax or voice/fax modem.
You may select from the available COM ports/modems.
If SuperVoice cannot find your modem during startup, you will see the Re-Configure Modem dialog box, allowing you to select the proper COM port and modem. If you have more than one modem connected to your system, you may switch modems using the Re-Configure Modem dialog box.

Re-configure Modem (modem detected)

After you select a COM port (in the main Re-configure Modem dialog box), SuperVoice will check the modem on that port to determine its identity. It then displays the modem's vendor ID number. Please do not change this number -- doing so may cause serious problems. If you believe that SuperVoice has improperly identified your modem, please contact Pacific Image Communications' technical support department.

SuperVoice provides different drivers for different modems. Most of the modem features based on which modem chipset the modem uses. SuperVoice currently supports:

  • 3COM (US Robotics)
  • Conexant (Rockwell)
  • Cirrus Logic
  • ESS
  • Lucent
  • Motorola
  • TI

SuperVoice will update the software when new modem chipsets become available. Each modem or modem chipset that SuperVoice supports will have a unique VENDOR id. During the installation, SuperVoice will attempt to identify the modem the user is using and assigns a VENDOR id to the modem. If SuperVoice made a mistake in identifying the modem, an error "Invalid modem response" error message might occur during the start-up phase of SuperVoice. The user can force the SuperVoice to use another VENDOR id by using the Re-Configure Modem item from the SYSTEM menu.
SuperVoice will treat Dialogic board as just a different Modem chipset. The vendor number will be 94.

There are 3 major features for each modem:
DATA - this is used for connecting to the Internet or BBS. Almost all modems have this feature

FAX - this is used for sending/receiving faxes. Most of the modems have this feature.

VOICE ¨C this is used for answering machine, interactive voice response system and speakerphone.

Not all modems have this feature.
There are also a lot of voice features that a voice modem can support:

Speakerphone This feature allows the modem acts as a speakerphone. This is an analog speakerphone  (just the same as your speakerphone on your telephone handset.

Caller ID This feature allows the modem to capture the caller ID information from the telephone call. It also requires the caller ID service from the Telephone Company.

Distinctive ring This feature allows the modem to distinguish between 2 or more type of ringing. It also requires the distinctive ring service from the Telephone Company.

Handset Playing/Recording This feature allows the user to play/record voice message to the computer by using the handset attached to the modem.

Speaker Playing This feature allows the user to listen to the voice message from the speaker which is attached to the modem, not the sound card.

Microphone This feature allows the user to record a voice message into the computer from the microphone attached to the modem, not the sound card.

Modem -- 3Com
Independent Mode

Some modems can operate in Independent Mode. This means that:

Callers will be able to send faxes and leave voice messages as long as the modem is turned on and connected to a telephone line, even if the computer is turned off or SuperVoice is not running.
When you start SuperVoice, it will check the modem for fax and voice messages. It will automatically download any messages from the modem into your computer. Messages will appear in the Incoming Fax and Incoming Voice Message dialog boxes.
See the documentation for your modem to find out if it has this feature and to find out more about how it operates.

Note: When your modem is operating in Independent Mode, it only has access to its own, built-in features. It does not have access to SuperVoice or any of its functions. This means that in Independent Mode, features such as Fax on Demand, the One-level Tree script, pager notification, the Mini-BBS and Remote Change Greeting will not be available, since they are functions of SuperVoice, and not the modem.

Set Independent Feature
Enable / Disable Allows you to enable / disable Independent Mode features, including fax and voice reception, dialup retrieval, call screening and password.

Greeting         Record and play the greeting that callers will hear when the modem is operating in Independent Mode. Click on the Download button to send the recorded message to the modem.

It will switch to Independent Mode automatically when you exit SuperVoice, if you have enabled the Independent Feature option.

Dialup Retrieval    Enable     You will be able to retrieve fax and voice messages stored in the modem by telephone when it is running in Independent Mode. Note: If SuperVoice is not running, you will be able to retrieve only those messages which are stored in the modem, not those stored on the computer's hard disk.

Fax Id         This number will appear in the header of all outgoing faxes. Ordinarily, this would be your fax phone number. Optional.

# of Rings         You can set the number of times that the telephone will ring before the modem answers in Independent Mode.

Independent Modem Message Recording

If your modem is capable of operating independently of your computer, it will be able to play a small set of voice messages of its own. These messages are actually stored in the modem, allowing them to play even when the computer is not running.

The messages are:

Greeting This is the greeting that callers will hear when the modem is in Independent Mode. It asks callers to leave a message.

Message Full     This is the message that callers will hear if the modem's memory is full and it cannot take any more messages.

The modem itself does not come with pre-recorded, pre-installed messages; unless you install messages, callers will not hear anything when they reach the modem. SuperVoice does, however, include two messages (GREETSAR.VOX and MSGFULL.VOX), which you can install in the modem. To install the messages, click on the Greeting and / or Message Full buttons in the Setup Independent Feature dialog box. You will see a special version of the Record File dialog box, which looks and acts just like the standard Record File dialog box, with one exception: a new button, labeled Download.

You can use the default messages simply by using the Download button to install them without any modification; the text of the message appears in the Message field. If you want to record your own message, first change the text in the Message field (for reference), then record your new Greeting or Message Full announcement, just like you would record any other greeting. Whether you use the default messages or record your own, you must click on the Download button to send the message to the modem. Now, when your modem is in Independent Mode, callers will hear your greeting, or, if there is no room for new messages, a Message Full announcement.
